Crochet Basics
Whether you are new to crochet or brushing up your basic techniques, you will find everything you need to tackle your crochet project. These instructions are written step by step with photo references making them easier to understand.
Let’s begin with the very basic stitch you need to start any crochet project.
Slip Knot and Chain
Any Crochet begins with a chain which is worked into the foundation row. Everyone has a different way of doing it, this is my favourite. To make a chain, start with a slip Knot.
Step 1: To make a slip knot, make a loop few inches from the end of the yarn, insert the hook through the loop, and grab the working end of the yarn into the loop.
Step 2: Now draw the yarn through the loop on the hook. Make sure to not pull the yarn too tight or too loose. Maintaining consistent tension throughout makes your stitches look even. This is a Slip Knot.
Now let’s make a chain Stitch.
Step 3: To start your chain, Wrap the yarn over the hook [yarn over] from back to front and grab it with hook. Make sure to point end of the hook inward to easily slip through the loop.
Step 4: Draw the yarn through the loop on the hook. This makes one Chain Stich [Ch St].
Repeat the process to make a row of chains. When Counting Chains, do not count the slip knot at the beginning or the loop that is on the hook.
Slip Stitch
Skill level: Easy
The Slip Stitch is a very simple stitch which is used to join two pieces of crochet together or when working in rounds.
Step 1: To make a slip stitch, insert the hook into the center of the next chain stitch, wrap the yarn over the hook. If working in rounds, insert the yarn into center of the very first chain stitch to form a circle.
Step 2: Draw the yarn through the stitch and the loop onto the hook. This completes one slip stitch.
