The single crochet stitch is one of the foundational techniques in crochet. This simple stitch creates a dense and sturdy fabric, making it ideal for making a large range of patterns such as scarves, hats, blankets, and even garments.

Step by Step Instructions to make a Single Crochet Stitch

Skill level: Easy

Step 1: Skip the first chain stitch. This stitch does not count as a single crochet.

Step 2: Insert the hook into the center of the next chain stitch, wrap the yarn over the hook and draw the yarn through the stitch. There are two loops on the hook.

Step 3: Wrap the yarn over the hook again and draw the yarn through both loops. One loop remains on the hook. This is one single crochet stitch.

Step 4: Repeat step 2 and step 3 in each of the remaining chains. Make sure to work in the very last chain. This completes one row of single crochet stitch. At the end of the row, make one chain stitch, then turn the work counter-clockwise, leaving the hook in the chain.

step 5: Now you begin next row by working into the stitches of the previous row. Make one single crochet stitch in first stitch and in each remaining stitch of the previous row. Be sure to work into the last stitch. Chain 1, turn [ch 1 does not count as a stitch].

step 6: Repeat single crochet rows following the pattern.

When working in single crochet, always insert the hook through both top loops of the next stitch, unless the directions specify front loop or back loop only.
