The double crochet stitch is a fundamental technique in crochet, offering a bit more height and versatility compared to a single crochet stitch. This stitch creates a slightly looser fabric, making it perfect for projects where drape and flexibility are desired, such as shawls, sweaters, blankets, and afghans.
It is made by wrapping yarn from back to front before placing the hook in the stitch which is called ‘yarn over’.
Step by step instructions to make a double crochet stitch
Skill level: Easy
step 1: Skip first 3 stitches.
step 2: Yarn over and insert hook into the 4th chain from the hook on the foundation chain or specified stitch
step 3: Yarn over and pull through the chain. You will have 3 loops on the hook.
step 4: yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook.
step 5: Yarn over again and pull through remaining 2 loops. This completes on double crochet stitch.
step 6: Repeat steps 2 to 5 to complete one row of double crochet stitches. At the end of the row chain 3, turn.[ch 3 counts as one double crochet].
There are two ways of starting next double crochet row.
The first double crochet can be worked in the second stitch of next row. This will leave a small gap between the chain 3 stitch and the first double crochet. Chain 3 is counted as a stitch.
Or, the first double crochet can be worked in the same chain 3 space stich of next row. This will create a much neater look and the chain 3 does not count as a stitch.
step 7: Repeat double crochet rows following the pattern.
